Not another motivational speaker…

by Nick on February 1, 2010

There are a lot more speakers than doers in this world, and some of the doers can be more dangerous than an idle idea man or woman could ever be.

Every single good businessman knows this, and that’s why it’s not always easy to nail down financial support, regardless of how much you believe in what you do. Maybe we should recap our obstacles:

1) first-year business

2) first-year soccer business

3) first-year soccer business making up for an inadequate predecessor.

GO TEAM!

So it takes just one slip-up to murder your chances with a potential sponsor. For example, I had a mutually-beneficial idea for a high-profile company in the area and set up a 2 p.m. phone meeting. Long-story-short, an absurdly-early work shift, a fairly regular mid-afternoon nap and my perfectly-good phone alarm deciding not to work conspired to make one particular trek to a partnership harder than it should be (Look, I admitted failure. We all win).

Seriously, though, it’s fairly stressful stuff. The soccer stuff is child’s play in a relative sense, because Buffalo’s soccer community is unbelievable. The coaching pool, the elite player pool, the sheer number of soccer players supporters — you name it, we’re all set on that side.

That’s the most important one, but whether it’s $25 for a season ticket or $20,000 to save us for several years, it won’t be easy. The good news is, we’ve got a lot of action workers in the group, and that’s a good idea.

Working with a coach. Weird stuff.

by Nick on January 7, 2010

I’ve had a bunch of jobs, most of which found me reporting to other people. As owner of FC Buffalo, I’ve had to learn a lot and fast about working with others when you’re the one to “answer to” (in a sense).

There’s an obvious exception: the coach. Luckily, Jim is an A-plus soccer guy, so while I watched try-outs today, I wasn’t exactly stressing out, but I was curious what he thinks. While I’ve covered the Sabres, Bills and countless college teams, I’ve heard coaches explain the positives and minuses of players, but never with blunt honesty.

In just a few meetings, Jim and I have had discussions that help me understand what upper-level coaches are looking for besides skill and hustle. It was fun for me to note some of the players who caught my eye today, and hearing Jim’s take on them — guys like Binghamton’s Ryan Walter and Houghton goalkeeper Steve Zacchigna. Was Medaille’s right-footed blaster Evan Johnson as strong as he looked? Same question for Jordan Brouk (UB) or Scott Zorn (Rochester).

The one thing I know for sure is that I did not make a mistake here. Running a soccer team is a lot of work, but it’s thrilling stuff. It may even be the stuff of direction!

Best wishes to Ben Olsen

November 24, 2009

Just a quick note — in the event someone passes this on to him — to thank Ben Olsen for being a model American soccer player. The 5′8″ midfielder didn’t play like his size said, and was someone a less-than-average height guy like me could aspire to mimic.
He spent all but 18 matches of his [...]
